In January of 2012 I opened the Denver Entertainment Art & Design Academy (aka D.E.A.D. Academy), which teaches classes in the art side of movies, video games, comic books, FX makeup, and sculpting. We bring in teachers who are professionals in their industries to show our students what they can expect out there, as well as to help them create portfolios that will help them to get work. For more intensive information, visit the website at www.deadacademy.com - but I will give a brief overview below.
Denver Entertainment Art & Design Academy
SMALL GROUP ART CLASSES WITH ZAK HENNESSEY
In late 2014, I began offering specialized, small group classes for the students who were very serious about succeeding in their chosen fields. These classes went beyond what was taught in the regular classes, and allowed a lot more one-on-one time with students on a wider range of skills. I plan on focusing more on this in 2015, as it was well received, and I saw real progress from the students who took advantage. Contact me for more details.
ART CLASSES FOR THE FX MAKEUP INDUSTRY
Thanks to shows like FaceOff and The Walking Dead, FX became one of our most popular departments. We've had some great professionals come in and teach our classes, and many of our earliest students now work in the industry. One of our students really took the reigns and has added 7 shows to his IMDb listing. If you've seen it on FaceOff, we've taught it, and more.
ART CLASSES FOR THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY
One of our most popular areas, the comic book classes teach you how to block out, compose, layout, rough, pencil, ink, color, and letter a comic book like the pros. It takes a lot of work to create a comic book, so it isn't for everybody. Some of our more dedicated students have gone on to successfully create their own comcs. Our 2015 schedule will have limited slots, so if interested, get on our radar.
ART CLASSES FOR THE MOVIE INDUSTRY
The most popular classes in this area are our concept art classes, which include character design, creature design, heroic figures and forms, heroic heads and hands, and action anatomy (all of which go well with our comic book and video game departments). Due to time constraints, there will be fewer classes in this area in 2015, so if you see one and want to take it, best to sign up as soon as you can.
ART CLASSES FOR THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY
Another fairly popular department, that has a lot of crossover with the Movie art classes. As with those classes, there will be fewer offerings in this area due to time constraints, so if you see a class that interests you, it would behoove you to sign up earlier rather than later, due to the limited slots that will be available.
ART CLASSES FOR SCULPTING
In this department, we teach classes that help you create fantastic props, monster heads, maquette sculptures, statuettes, and more. There is a lot of crossover between this department and the FX makeup class, as the sculpting skills taught here are invaluable for those who wish to make FX masks, and prosthetics. As with all classes in 2015, there will be a very limited number of seats available.
